Making Issue - Based Films on Human Interest

SAF makes films that showcase various issues of human interest for a larger dissemination of information. Well-known directors of the country such as Shyam Benegal, Goutam Ghose, Sudhir Mishra and Santosh Sivan help the Foundation on these projects.

The Treasure in the Snow: Sikkim
The Foundation’s first film, a 27-minute documentary – The Treasure in the Snow: Sikkim – directed by acclaimed film-maker Goutam Ghose, received the National Award with the citation,
‘The Award for the Best Promotional Film of the Year 2002 is given to the English Film THE TREASURE IN THE SNOW: SIKKIM for its weaving of a magical cinematic spell that vividly captures the mist and mystery of the abundant natural beauty of Sikkim – its history, people and culture.’
SAF designed, crafted and executed the Film.

Abar Arannye (‘Again in the forest’)
SAF supported the production of this Bengali film – a sequel to Satyajit Ray’s much acclaimed film Arannyer Din Ratri (‘days and nights in the forest’) – entitled Abar Aranye (‘again in the forest’), directed by Goutam Ghose. It generated a very positive response from the audience and bagged the coveted National Award in three categories in the year 2003, as well as the Best Director’s Award.

Tapoban to Sunderban – A heart touching journey of Ganga
The Foundation produced this path-breaking film to capture the life of the people living on the banks of the Ganga and to follow the journey of this river. The film holds some of the most spectacular scenic views. It illustrates the river’s link to the people, the diversified cultures prevalent along its banks and presents the Ganga as a cultural and economic lifeline to millions of people living beside it.

The Sacred Ganga (An awareness film on the river Ganga)
This Film was produced by SAF in collaboration with Sankat Mochan Foundation. It is an effort to save the holy river Ganga and create awareness about its current plight. This film was directed by the renowned film-maker Santosh Sivan and presented by Amitabh Bachchan. It portrays the struggle and mission of Prof. Veer Bhadra Mishra who launched the ‘Swatchcha Ganga Abhiyan’ in 1982. The film captures the effort that gave birth to an indigenous moment that drew worldwide attention and created international concern on the plight of the river. The film is also the focus of a single man’s determination and commitment, integrating science and faith, that made the most sincere and conscientious effort to save the river that tries to reverse the immense pathetic condition created due to the reckless advancement of human civilisation.
